There is a reason why Berchtesgaden was chosen by Hitler as the location of his Eagles Nest; it’s beautiful. Fortunately, he’s long gone and what is left is an amazing place to visit as a side-trip on your voyage to Munich. We visited Berchtesgaden in October, 2012 during our honeymoon and enjoyed every minute of our time on the border of Germany and Austria.
Among the highlights of our trip were visiting the aforementioned Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) and the Jennerbahn. Another highlight was the traditional German food and beverage. Lots of Schnitzels and beer were consumed during our time in Berchtesgaden.
If you are looking to visit the area, I can’t recommend the Intercontinental Berchtesgaden Resort highly enough. It is fairly centrally located and makes it easy to see the city while still having views from your hotel. In fact, some of the photos you see below were taken from our hotel. Note – this hotel changed ownership in 2015, and is no longer part of IHG.
If you decide to take the Jennerbahn to the top of the mountain, you will see a beautiful little town with shops and restaurants to visit.
Downtown Berchtesgaden is also quite nice.
We are convinced that this iconic post card shot is impossible to take.
And where else in the world do you see Duff Beer?
