At my home I have a wall covered in canvas prints of photos I have taken during my travels. Digital photos printed on canvas create a beautiful effect that looks somewhere in between a photo and a painting, which is forgiving for flaws in photos while also very eye catching when I have visitors. Every year or two I add photos to the wall to include updated destinations from my trips, and I am beginning to run out of horizontal space to place them.
That means I need to start adding photos vertically at the top of the wall that are long and skinny. This space is perfect for panoramas, especially those taken with my iPhone.
A few days ago I ordered 3 canvases of photos that were 12 inches tall and either 37 or 60 inches wide. On one side will be the Black River Gorges World Heritage site in Mauritius. On the right side, we will have a sunset on the island of Moorea. In between will be the photo shown above, a panoramic photo that I took using my iPhone 4S at the summit of the Kehlsteinhaus, Hitler’s Eagles Nest in Obsersalzberg, Germany. The photo overlooks the city of Salzburg in Austria and also features several mountains in the foreground.
While I took over a hundred photos at the top of the mountain (and some were probably even more beautiful than this one) I feel that this one will make the best canvas because of the length and the color contrast involved (if you view enlarged picture, you’ll understand what I mean). To make sure it “pops” on Canvas, I enhanced the colors shown in the photo by using some lightening and contrasting brushes in Aperture. I also cropped the photo slightly to fit the space required for the canvas.
I have a feeling that this canvas will be the most commented on photo of the entire collection!
For those of you who are interested, here is a very poorly lit photo of what the wall looks like currently, shortly before these new canvases are added. You may recognize a few of these photos from previous photo Fridays!

If you are looking to do Canvas yourself, let me know and I can share some of my good and bad experiences.
I’d be curious to know where you order your canvases. That wall looks great! Seems like a cheaper option than professional framed photos (I could be wrong)
I have always used a service called canvaspress.com in the past. The quality is very good, but the prices seem high compared to others. They seem to raise their prices while others are lowering them. Might want to shop around a bit.
